2008 Course Description

As the population ages and as prolonged care and treatment become ‎available for many acute and chronic diseases, most physicians will have ‎to address the issue of pain management with their patients. The need for physicians to know the basics of pain management and options available for advanced pain management techniques has been recognized as imperative and crucial for treatment of patients. Due to the limited number of fellowship trained interventional pain management specialists, alternate means must be used for practicing physicians to learn about the basics of pain management and the options available for optimal treatment of patients.

In its seventh year, the Mid-West Pain Management Symposium ‎Retreat™ is a comprehensive forum to cover the myriad complexities of pain management and to provide working models on such issues as ‎‎"how to" assess pain. The Symposium is directed towards the practitioner and the pain ‎management specialist. This year the Symposium will address palliative care, the psychological impact of pain, consequences of pain, and strategies for ‎treatment and care of acute and chronic pain. For the interventional pain management specialist it is also an opportunity for ‎a refresher course in certain advanced pain management techniques. The Symposium provides the foundation to ‎enable physicians and health care professionals to explore the ‎possibilities and to provide the best possible options to patients for ‎pain management. A panel of internationally known experts will present this year's Symposium.

Purpose

The purpose of this annual ‎meeting is to provide "how to" information, refresher courses for advanced pain ‎management specialists, to educate about the complexities of pain and types of pain management protocols, and disclose ‎information that will enable practitioners to provide the highest level of ‎pain management services.‎

Target Audience

The Symposium is designed and targeted for all medical practitioners ‎and allied health care professionals involved in and interested in ‎treating patients with pain issues. This meeting is for the health care professional who wants a better understanding of "how to" assess pain and knowledge about the complex issues involving pain, pain associated with various diseases, ‎the consequences of pain such as depression and insomnia, and the comprehensive care of patients. The Symposium provides a review of advanced pain therapy techniques for the pain management specialist as ‎well as knowledge of advanced pain management therapies ‎available for optimal care for the practitioner who is not a pain management specialist.‎
